Deborah Mattson Australian Artist

Bibliographical Statement

Having a mother who is a successful artist means my earliest memories are entwined with the smell of turps, paint and colours. Because of my mother’s influence I have no memory of a time when art has not been a part of my life.

A world of travel, adventure and children had me temporarily pack away my brushes, in 2009 I joined a local art co-op for 18 months. Art Gallery Kurnell gave me a successful outlet for my work and the opportunity to be included in numerous exhibitions. Including an exhibition published in the National Maritime Museums ‘Signals’ magazine.

Traditional techniques, combined with imagination and the fun of experimentation leads me to create innovative pieces. Mostly self taught I find the internet and online art community to be a constant source of education and motivation, it is something I love being a part of.

I’ll use my fingers, rags, cardboard, really anything at hand to quickly gain the texture and foundation I want, then as the work progresses gentle touches, soft brushes and pauses become more frequent.

No matter the subject or medium I aim for my work to evoke thought and feeling.
